One of the issues expressed by educators was the possible drug possession and use at the school. Educators feel students lack focus in class due to these drugs and some students are allegedly selling these drugs which is illegal.

The school has a computer lab with over 20 computers that are not working because most towers were stolen, allegedly by community members. There are also missing light bulbs and cut. Electric cables.

We want to arrange a programme that will include speeches by law persons, drug abuse councillors and hopefully leaders within the community who can speak to students and community members about the importance of preserving resources and taking care of school property. And also reporting the perpetrators who steal from the School.
During our visit at Siyanda High School, we were provided with a list of needs that included new windows, computers, shelves, a new driveway, redecoration of the library and a security house.

We were given a tour of the School and we got an insight of what some of the biggest issues are in the School. Some of those issues were crime and destruction of property, the School previously had most of the things they required but they we either stolen or destroyed or vandalised.

We feel the school and the community need a crime intervention programme that will help in enlightening the negative effects theft has on the learners
and the development of the school.

We also feel a security house will help with making sure a security guard is always present at the gate, searching students and guarding the School property.
The purpose of this blog is to publish regular updates on the ongoing community enrichment program of building a security house and arranging a crime intervention campaign for Siyanda High School. The project is an innitiative by a group of 2nd year Public Relations students from Durban University of Technology.

Siyanda High School is a school situated at Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg. The school has over 1000 learners both male and female.
